The Latosa Escrima Concepts Chart

The Latosa Escrima Concepts are Principles, fundamental of universal law and truth upon which other techniques and actions are based. The concepts of Latosa Weapon System:
- Balance (Balanced from all directions, poised for attack)
- Power
- Focus (Focus on the opponent, the environment, and winning)
- Timing, Speed, and Distance all three work as one concept
- Transition (Flowing and interchangeable techniques)
The brief explanation of these concepts is to ask the question, "Can you effectively
protect yourself and prevent further attack without any of these concepts?" The answer is no. If you are not balanced can you generate stopping power? If you aren't focused on your opponent, can you be balanced? If you don't understand how to transition from one state to another, how do you flow from a standstill to pre-emptive strikes or from stick range to kicks and punches?
Like WT, Latosa Weapon System's emphasis is on concepts rather than techniques. Concepts make the techniques work. (The right concept will even make the worst technique more effective.) And since concepts never change, an Escrimador living the Latosa concepts will be empowered with whatever he puts in his hands. No one walks around with rattan sticks, balisong knives, or two-handed swords. (Incidentally, Alaskan law forbids these anywhere in your car except the trunk!) Nearly everyone has access to pocketknives, car keys, forks, ballpoint pens, and
hairbrushes! LWS concepts empower the student with anything that is picked up.
GM Latosa was taught several styles, but absorbed and incorporated only the concepts and
techniques whose aim is to win! The most important thing that can be said of Latosa Weapon System is the emphasis on concepts. The concepts of Balance, Focus, Power (timing, speed, and distance), Attitude, and Transition make for a well-rounded Escrimador who can react creatively and responsibly to an attack. Latosa Weapon System does not cloud the mind with countless techniques. The fewer techniques to remember, the faster the reaction (just like in WT).
Attitude (Warrior mentality, give nothing, take everything)
