Buddhism is a philosophy that originated in northern India in the 5th century B.C.E. Most students of philosophy, world history, or comparative religions know the story of the wealthy young Indian prince, Siddhartha Gautama, whose father kept the unpleasant realities of the world hidden from his son. One day, however, these efforts failed, and the young prince was able to witness disease, poverty, and death. Naturally enough, these realities frightened him, especially after he learned the he, too was mortal and subject to these influences. One night he stole away from the palace and he began a pilgrimage to seek the spiritual path that would release him from suffering. After trying many approaches (including asceticism) he finally rested under a tree and went into a deep meditation. During this meditation he became enlightened ("buddha" means "enlightened one," roughly translating further into" one who sees truth"), meaning he understood the truths of the world and the path to alleviate suffering.
